A Bourbon Named Barrel

Barrel Bourbon

I was intrigued when I came across a new bourbon that just happened to be named Barrell. What could be a better fit for our bar, right? I didn’t necessarily have super high hopes for the quality of the whiskey as Barrell is yet another non-distiller release. However, the more I read about it, including the fact it scored 94 points in the 2014 Ultimate Spirits Challenge, the more interested I was in getting my hands on some.

Upon tasting the whiskey I have to say I really enjoyed it. It’s got a rich mouth feel and pretty smooth for 121 proof and you can taste the Tennessee characteristics- which I personally liked a lot. Barrell is a non distiller produced whiskey, so we’re not sure where it came from exactly but here the facts we do know:

  • Mash bill: 70% corn, 25% rye, 5% malted barley
  • Distilled in Tennessee
  • Aged in Kentucky
  • Bottled at 121.6 proof
  • Aged for 5 years in charred white oak barrels

Great Whiskey not from Kentucky

Barrel bourbon selections

If I’m honest with myself, I’ve liked just about every bourbon whiskey I have ever had.  Sure, I’ve been lucky enough to sample some of the finest whiskeys in the world and generally will reach for some rarer Kentucky classics, including William Larue Weller, George T. Stagg or anything Van Winkle. However, there is some great brown water being produced all over this country of ours, and most are very reasonable priced. Here are some of my favorites I recommend that you can currently find at Barrel DC on Capitol Hill:

Barrel is One Month Old…TODAY!

Barrel is officially one month old today! It’s hard to believe after all the struggles and delays that Barrel is finally open and we have been operating for a full month. The response from the Capitol Hill neighborhood and our guests has been overwhelmingly supportive and frankly, extremely rewarding. This is my fourth project on the Hill and the first in several years; I’ve learned a lot over that time span and have seen tremendous growth and diversity in our industry. It’s all very exciting and also can be a little intimidating to compete with so many new and innovative bars and restaurants that have changed our great city for the better. I feel strongly that long term success is rooted in a passion for what you do and for serving people. We have tried hard to bring that to Barrel and I want to thank everyone who has come in, given us a try, and written such nice reviews.  It’s been a great first month and we look forward to many more!
